On
the 27th February 2007 Liverpool Town Hall played
host to the Mesothelioma Action Day.
The event was
attended by sufferers of Mesothelioma, their relatives and
friends, members of the legal profession and health care
providers and was organised by the Merseyside Asbestos Victim
Support Group, based in Oriel Chambers who do sterling work for
sufferers.
The event was to
raise awareness of the illness and the fact that Mesothelioma
kills and claims more lives each year than cervical cancer. The
cancer is predominantly limited to male suffers in their 60’s
onwards and can have a latency period of 15 – 20 years. However,
women and young males have been known to be sufferers
A video was
played, showing sufferers, families and bereaved spouses talking
about the impact the disease has had on their lives. There was a
talk from leading disease Barrister, Andrew McDonald as to the
pitfalls and procedure for bringing claims and he answered some
concerns raised by people. The McMillan nurses, the Victim
Support Group and Welfare rights advisers were also on hand to
give advice and support to guests, as were the specialist
solicitors who deal with these cases, such as ourselves. The
Lord Mayor of Liverpool and other dignitaries gave a speech
supporting the cause and the fact that asbestos is still in the
work place and is still a danger even today. After the
conference local school children released balloons in memory of
those who have died.
Harkin Lloyd are a
leading disease firm

the Victim support.
